The path to become a licensed maritime pilot in Washington state is a multi-step process consisting of
​qualification, examination, training, and finally licensure.

The first step is to review the requirements. If you qualify to apply for the exam, submit your documents and application fee.  


​The BPC will review your credentials, Qualified applicants will receive an invitation to sit for the Written Exam. Our Written Exam is available remotely - yes, you can complete the Written Exam from anywhere with a reliable internet connection, camera, and area where you can focus without distractions.

PROCESS OVERVIEW

Applicants who successfully complete the Written Exam are then eligible for the Simulator Evaluation.

​The scores for the Written Exam and Simulator are ranked and qualified candidates placed on a waiting list to be called into the Pilot Training Program when a spot is available. 


The Pilot Training Program consists of Observation, Training, and Evaluation. Observation is aimed at familiarization of different locations, piloting styles, and vessel types.
